Overview on Umbria & Undiscovered Tuscany Walking Tour

This tour is a delightful 7-day journey through hidden gems of central Italy, blending culture, history, and culinary experiences. Starting in Orvieto, you’ll explore the amazing Cathedral and sail across Lake Bolsena, enjoying a picturesque boat tour with lunch onboard. Discover medieval villages like Civita di Bagnoregio and Sorano, with wine tastings and visits to historical fortresses. Learn to cook traditional tortelli in a cooking class, and explore the Via Cava paths and the fascinating Pitigliano and its “Little Gerusalem. Finish with an olive oil tasting in Sovana and a farewell cheese show at a local agriturismo.

Itinerary of Umbria & Undiscovered Tuscany Walking Tour

Day 1 – Welcome to Orvieto (Night in Orvieto)

Your journey begins in the ancient hilltop town of Orvieto, a place of enchanting charm. Stroll through its medieval streets before visiting the magnificent Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece. With a local guide, you’ll uncover the rich history of this stunning town. In the evening, indulge in a delectable truffle dinner at a local restaurant, a perfect introduction to Umbria’s culinary treasures.

Day 2 – The Tranquility of Lake Bolsena (Night in Orvieto)

A serene day awaits at Lake Bolsena, where a peaceful walk around its shores lets you breathe in the beauty of nature. Then, board a private boat for a leisurely cruise across the sparkling waters. As you drift along, enjoy a delightful lunch onboard, savoring both the food and the views. Dinner is on your own tonight, with the opportunity to explore local dining options in Orvieto.

Day 3 – The Rose Garden of Rocca Ripesena & The Dying City (Night in Orvieto – Umbria)

Today, we venture to the small, enchanting village of Rocca Ripesena, renowned for its lush rose gardens. A peaceful walk through the countryside leads us to Sugano for a special wine tasting and lunch at Acquaccina, where Luigi, the sole caretaker of this vineyard, will share his stories and serve a delicious farm-to-table meal. In the evening, visit the captivating village of Civita di Bagnoregio, known as “The Dying City.” Walking its ancient streets feels like stepping into a fairytale. We’ll dine here, with stunning views of the surrounding valleys.

Day 4 – Into Tuscany: Sorano & Hidden Vitozza (Night in Sorano – Tuscany)

A scenic drive takes us into Tuscany to explore the abandoned cave town of  Vitozza. Hidden in the woods, these caves were home to villagers until just a few years ago. Afterward, we head to Sorano, where we enjoy a wine tasting at Francesco Santori’s winery. This ancient town, with its impressive fortress and charming streets, offers a glimpse into Tuscany’s lesser-known treasures. Enjoy a free evening, with many delightful restaurants to choose from.

Day 5 – The Ancient Pathways & Pitigliano’s Hidden Stories (Night in Sorano – Tuscany)

Today’s adventure takes us along the Via Cava San Giuseppe, one of the remarkable Etruscan pathways carved into the rock, enveloping you in history and mystery. We’ll walk to Pitigliano, where the town’s intricate alleyways and historic charm await. After a local lunch, we meet Elisabetta, the best guide and storyteller, who will take us through the moving history of The Little Gerusalem, Pitigliano’s Jewish ghetto. Her tales will leave you deeply touched. End the day with a hands-on tortelli-making class, followed by a hearty dinner.

Day 6 – Sovana’s Hidden Treasures & A Farm Feast Finale (Night in Sorano – Tuscany)

Our journey continues with a visit to the Aldobrandesca Tomb and another Etruscan wonder, the Via Cava San Sebastiano. Following a tranquil walk, we’ll enjoy an olive oil tasting and light lunch at Il Frantoio di Sovana, where you’ll experience the flavors of this fertile land. The grand finale takes place at Agriturismo Aia del Tufo, where you’ll join a show-cooking session to learn the art of cheese making, accompanied by a joyful farewell dinner amidst the rolling Tuscan hills.

Day 7 – Transfer to Orvieto Train Station

As we bid farewell, we’ll return to Orvieto train station, from where you can easily travel to your next destination. For example with just a 90-minute train ride, you’ll be at Rome’s airport, ready to reflect on the unforgettable memories of your journey through Umbria and undiscovered Tuscany.

Useful information on the tour

 

How to prepare for this trip

Walking or jogging for 60 minutes 3 times a week for 5 weeks ahead of trip will make your experience more enjoyable. In case you live in a flat area you might also incorporate some steps in your physical activity.

 

What to bring:

  • Walking shoes with good traction (sometimes we might have mud on the trail)
  • Hat, Swimming suit, sun cream, water bottle to refill with tap water
  • Dinners at Italian restaurants do not require any special dress code.
    Wear shoes with good traction. 
  • We provide walking sticks.

An average day of the trip

On a typical day you hike/walk with your guide in the morning for 3 hours, then we stop at a restaurant or farmhouse for lunch (lunch can last 1hour and half). We serve local food and wines as we believe that food plays an important role in the enjoyment of Amalfi coast.
In the afternoon there might be some more walking or town stroll. Around 4.30 or 5pm your guide will take you back to the hotel.
Before dinner you will be able to rest a couple of hours.
Dinner will be served in a restaurant in town that you will be able to easily reach on foot.
Local wine is always included for lunch or dinner. We serve vino della casa (house wine). You are welcome to buy your own wine from the list.

 

Weather

In general, the climate in Umbria and Tuscany is very mild. Usually summers are hot with little or no rain. July and August are the hottest months (but still nice for walking as there is always a breeze blowing up on the hills). Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November) are milder. You can have some drops of rain but not too many. Winter is colder but you still can count on many sunny days.

Tipping your guides

Single Guide Tour: If your tour is led by a single guide, it is customary to provide a minimum tip of 20 euros per day, per customer. Your guide will be your primary source of information and assistance throughout the tour, and this gesture will reflect your gratitude for their personalized service.

Dual Guide Tour: In cases where your tour is led by two guides, we recommend a minimum tip of 10 euros per day, per customer, for each guide. This ensures that both guides are acknowledged for their contributions to your tour experience.

Tipping your drivers

If you wish to tip your drivers each of you might want to tip them 5 euro per day per driver.

Extra expenses

Plan to have extra cash or money in your credit card enough to buy a couple of coffee or tea every day (5 euros average) . One night out of six you are on your own for dinner (20-25 euros per meal per person, average)
